If you're still on XP, perhaps now is a good time to finally upgrade.

In an ideal world, old versions of Windows would roll off Microsoft's list of supported products and be replaced by new ones at regular, predicable intervals.

Williams says that the hack, included just below, makes the system look like Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 which will continue to receive updated until April 9, 2019.

But if, for whatever reason, you're still running the out-of-date operating system, you really need to upgrade.

Microsoft on Tuesday finally stopped providing antimalware signatures for Windows XP.

Only Windows 7, with around 47 per cent of the market, sits above Windows XP, with the much maligned Windows 8 taking just shy of seven per cent of the OS cake.

If you're one of the many Windows XP users out there, the big question is, what happens now support has stopped?

Worse yet, XP users can no longer use Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool, so if your PC gets infected with malware — and it probably will — you're on your own. You've said goodbye to XP, which first launched in 2001, and embraced a more modern OS, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Microsoft has been pleading with customers to upgrade to a new OS for years, so you can't say you weren't warned about this.

This specific hack works only on 32-bit systems, but a 64-bit workaround is available at this page, which may have been Williams's source for the 32-bit hack.

[UPDATE:] Late Monday we received a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson: We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers.

Worryingly, these updates fixed two critical security flaws that would have allowed hackers to remotely execute code.

The final security fixes are part of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update for 8 April 2014, the last time Windows XP will be included.

At that time, Redmond also stopped letting those on Windows XP download its Security Essentials tool, which guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
